How to opt out of Bilt's 2027 changes

Last checked Oct 29, 2026. Not financial advice. Confirm the screen in your own Bilt app before the date.

The deadline to keep Flexible Bilt Cash is your first Bilt card account anniversary on or after January 1, 2027, not December 31. If you do nothing, Bilt moves you to the refreshed benefits on that anniversary. To keep 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spend, Bilt says you opt out in card settings in the Bilt app before that date. Bilt's Card Offer Terms call that choice a Legacy Election.

TL;DR

  • Deadline: first card account anniversary on or after Jan 1, 2027. Not Dec 31.
  • Rule of thumb: once everyday spend reaches your rent, Housing-only pays 1.25X points and Flexible caps rent points at 1X. Flexible is the one that leaves leftover Bilt Cash. Use it only if you will actually redeem that cash.
  • Steps: find the anniversary, then opt out in card settings in the Bilt app.

Your deadline is your card anniversary, not Dec 31

Bilt's Card 2.0 Program Overview, updated Oct 27, 2026, says existing cardholders keep their current benefits until the first card account anniversary, and get the refreshed benefits then unless they opt out before that date.

The same article defines the date: "Your card account anniversary is the first day of the billing cycle that follows your account open date." Bilt's example: a card opened February 7, 2026 has its anniversary on the first day of the billing cycle that follows February 7, 2027.

The Card Offer Terms use a longer definition. "Card Anniversary Date" is the one-year anniversary of the first day of the first billing cycle that begins after the account open date, then the same day in later years. A "Legacy Election" is the choice, made in the Bilt app before the first Card Anniversary Date on or after January 1, 2027, to keep Flexible Bilt Cash.

If those two descriptions do not match the date you see, ask Bilt before you rely on either one. The concierge in the Bilt app can tell you the date. Opt out in card settings in the Bilt app before that date.

Opt out or not: the math at your rent

Two published rates drive the tables below. They are our math, not a quote from a Bilt calculator.

Housing-only. Bilt's Card Offer Terms set points from everyday spend in the same billing cycle, as a share of the housing payment: under 25% pays a 250-point floor; at least 25% pays 0.5X; at least 50% pays 0.75X; at least 75% pays 1X; 100% or more pays 1.25X. X means 1 point per $1 of the housing payment.

Flexible Bilt Cash. The Card Offer Terms say you earn 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spend, and every $3 of Bilt Cash unlocks 100 points on a housing payment, up to 1 point per $1. The Bilt Cash article says the minimum redemption is $0.03, which converts to 1 point. Bilt Cash you do not spend on points stays in the account. You do not get the 0X–1.25X tiers while this option is on.

A dash means leftover Bilt Cash under $1. At $0.03 per point, a few cents cannot unlock another point. On $2,000 rent and $1,000 of spend, Housing-only pays more points (1,500 vs 1,333). On $1,500 rent and $1,000 of spend, Flexible pays more points (1,333 vs 1,125) because Housing-only is still in the 0.75X bracket.

Rule of thumb

Once everyday spend reaches the rent amount, Housing-only pays 1.25X and Flexible is capped at 1X. At $2,000 rent and $2,000 of everyday spend, that is 2,500 points versus 2,000 points plus $20 of Bilt Cash. We do not assign a cash value to Bilt Points. Keep Flexible only if you will redeem the leftover Bilt Cash. If you will not, Housing-only pays more points on that row. There is no single flip at 50% of rent. On $1,500 rent, Flexible is ahead at $1,000 of spend and behind at $750.

When leftover Bilt Cash counts

Only if you redeem it. Bilt's Bilt Cash article lists capped uses, including $10 a month toward Lyft and dining credits. From January 1, 2027, hotel redemptions in the Bilt Travel Portal are twice a year: up to $50 (Blue and Silver), $100 (Gold and Platinum), or $200 (eligible Palladium cardholders on the refreshed benefits). Obsidian and Palladium can redeem $200 Bilt Cash for a Point Accelerator: +1X on the next $5,000 of everyday spend, up to five times a year. Full change list: Bilt 2027 changes. What you keep and what you give up

This table follows the "if you opt out" list on Bilt's Card 2.0 Program Overview. It is the opt-out, not a product change.

If you do nothing, the same article says the refreshed benefits start on the anniversary: one housing option, up to 1.25X, and annual Bilt Cash instead of hotel credits on Obsidian and Palladium.

How to opt out

Bilt's pages give these steps. They do not name the buttons.

  1. Get the anniversary date. Use the definition above, or ask the concierge in the Bilt app. Bilt says the concierge can tell you.
  2. Opt out before that date. Bilt says to do this in card settings in the Bilt app. The Card Offer Terms say the Legacy Election is made in the Bilt app. If you cannot find the control, ask the concierge before the anniversary.
  3. Know what "done" means in the terms. After a Legacy Election you keep Flexible Bilt Cash, and the offer terms say you may not switch to Housing-only under the legacy structure. You may still move to the new rewards structure later, in the Bilt app, effective the first day of the next billing cycle. Once you move, the terms say you cannot return to Flexible Bilt Cash.

There is no separate "confirm it worked" screen described on the pages we read.

What can undo the choice

A product upgrade or downgrade. Bilt's Program Overview says: "Changing your card moves you to the refreshed benefits, even if you opted out on your current card." It also says Bilt shows a screen explaining this before you confirm a card change. The Card Offer Terms have a separate Product Changes section on credits and bonuses. The sentence about losing the opt-out is the one on the Program Overview.

Authorized users do not get their own opt-out. The same overview says the choice applies to the whole card account, including authorized users, and that authorized users can't opt out separately. The offer terms also say the rewards option applies to the entire card account, including authorized-user activity.

Unused hotel credit, if you move to the refreshed benefits. Bilt says Palladium cardholders still receive the $200 Bilt Travel Hotel credit on January 1, 2027, and Obsidian cardholders receive $50. On the anniversary, if you move to the refreshed benefits, unredeemed hotel credit expires. If you opt out before the anniversary, Bilt says you keep the hotel credit as it works today. If you opt out and later switch to the new benefits after the anniversary, Bilt converts unredeemed hotel credit for the year into Bilt Cash, up to $400 (Palladium) or $100 (Obsidian).

Opening a Bilt card before Jan 1, 2027

Bilt's Program Overview says a card offer accepted on or after January 1, 2027 cannot earn 4% back in Bilt Cash. The refreshed benefits apply right away. An account with an open date before January 1, 2027 keeps the current setup until the first card anniversary and can opt out.

The Card Offer Terms sort people by Account Open Date, which they define as the date the card is opened and you can make purchases. Accept-the-offer and account-open are not the same sentence. If you apply in late 2026 and the account opens in 2027, ask Bilt which date they will use. Card approval depends on credit. Terms can change. Read them on bilt.com before you apply.

Our Bilt card page records the fees and reporting rules we have checked. Paying rent with a card covers the $0 housing fee and what other methods charge. Compare rewards services.

FAQ

Is the opt-out deadline December 31?

No. It is your first card account anniversary on or after January 1, 2027. Bilt's Program Overview and the Card Offer Terms both use that anniversary, not December 31.

How do I find my Bilt card anniversary?

Bilt says it is the first day of the billing cycle that follows your account open date, and that the concierge in the Bilt app can tell you. The offer terms define Card Anniversary Date from the billing cycle after the account open date.

Can I opt out and change my mind?

You can move to the new benefits later, in the Bilt app. After the anniversary that switch starts on the next billing cycle, and you cannot return to Flexible Bilt Cash. You also cannot switch between Flexible Bilt Cash and Housing-only after the anniversary.

Do authorized users have to opt out too?

No. Bilt says they can't opt out separately. The choice covers the whole card account.

Does upgrading to Palladium undo my opt-out?

Bilt says changing your card moves you to the refreshed benefits even if you opted out. That answer is not limited to Palladium. Bilt says it shows an explanation screen before you confirm.

What happens to my unused hotel credit?

If you move to the refreshed benefits, Bilt says unredeemed hotel credit expires. You still get the January 1, 2027 credit ($200 Palladium, $50 Obsidian). If you opt out and stay, Bilt says you keep the hotel credit as it works today.

Does opting out change my rent reporting?

Bilt's opt-out list does not mention it. The rent-reporting article updated Oct 16, 2026 still says members can get free reporting to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. That is not a promise of a higher score.
