Can you pay rent with a credit card without fees?

Short answer
- Bilt Card: no transaction fee on rent, mortgage or HOA paid through Bilt. But the money comes from your bank account within 24 hours, not your credit line.
- Flex: 2.5% credit card fee, plus $5.99/mo, 0.5% processing and up to 3% to split.
- Venmo: free from bank, debit or balance. Credit card sends can carry fees; check your card in the Venmo Wallet.
- Landlord portals: fees vary. Ask before you pay.

The math on rewards vs. fees
If a method charges 2.5% to put rent on a card, your card has to earn more than 2.5% back just to break even. On $2,000 rent, that's $50 a month, or $600 a year, before rewards.
Bilt avoids the fee. With Bilt's 2027 setup, rent points depend on everyday spend on the card:

How Bilt pays a landlord who doesn't take cards
Bilt says it can pay by:
- ACH, using an account and routing number you add to your landlord's portal,
- Venmo (arrives from "Bilt Technologies"),
- PayPal,
- or a mailed check.
Bilt says your landlord receives a standard payment and doesn't need to sign up.
Watch-outs
- Cash advance risk. Venmo warns some card issuers treat payments to people as cash advances, with extra fees and a higher APR.
- Splitting rent is credit. Flex calls the second payment "the amount you borrow." Flex says it charges no late fees or compounding interest, but your property's late fees still apply.
- Bilt needs approval. Bilt Cards are credit cards issued by Column N.A. and need credit approval. Bilt says applying to see if you're approved doesn't affect your score.
FAQ
Is there any truly free way to pay rent by credit card?
Bilt charges no transaction fee on housing payments made through Bilt. Strictly, the rent amount is debited from your bank, so you aren't borrowing it.
Does paying rent with Bilt build credit?
Bilt reports on-time rent to all three bureaus for free. Reporting can help build credit history. Results vary.
What does Flex charge for a credit card?
2.5% on any payment made with a credit card, on top of the $5.99 membership and other fees.
Does Venmo charge to pay rent?
$0 from your Venmo balance, bank or debit card. Check the Venmo app for card fees, and ask your card issuer about cash-advance fees.
Should I pay a 2.5–3% fee to earn card rewards?
Only if your rewards are worth more than the fee. Most of the time the math doesn't work.
