Does rent reporting actually raise your credit score?

Last checked Oct 28, 2026. Not financial advice.

Short answer

  • Reporting rent can help build credit history. It is not guaranteed to raise any score.
  • It only counts in scores that read rent: FICO 9, FICO 10, FICO 10T and VantageScore 3.0 and 4.0. FICO 8 does not.
  • The exception is Experian Boost: it adds your payments to your Experian file in a way the Experian-based FICO 8 can read. Regular rent reporting doesn't work that way.
  • The FICO scores used for most mortgages today (FICO 2, 4, 5) don't count rent. VantageScore 4.0 does, and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac lenders can now use it.
  • It helps most if you have thin or no credit. Late payments, if reported, can hurt.

Rent only enters a score if it is on your credit report first. FICO and VantageScore don't collect data. The three bureaus do.

What this means for a mortgage

Positive-only vs. full-file reporting

Most tenant-paid services say they report only on-time payments. Boom, Piñata, Self, Kikoff, Zillow and Flex all say so on their own pages. A landlord who reports directly may send both on-time and late payments. TransUnion says a delinquent rent account can land in the Adverse Accounts section of your report.

Ask before you enroll: "Do you report late payments?"

What providers claim (not independently verified)

Providers publish average gains. These are their numbers, not ours, and results vary.

ProviderClaim on its own site
ProviderBoomClaim on its own site"average increase of 28+ points in the first two weeks"
ProviderSelfClaim on its own site"Average gains hit 25 points" (rent and bills)
ProviderPiñataClaim on its own site"average 60 point increase in the 1st year"

We can't check these. They don't say which scores, which starting points, or how many people saw no change.

How long it takes

Bottom line

If you pay on time and have little credit, reporting rent is a low-risk way to add payment history, especially through a free option. If you already have strong credit, or you're about to apply for a loan scored with FICO 8 or a classic mortgage FICO, expect little or no change.

FAQ

Does rent reporting raise my FICO score?

Only FICO 9, 10 and 10T count rent. FICO 8 and the classic mortgage FICOs don't.

Does it help with a mortgage?

Maybe. VantageScore 4.0, now usable by all Fannie and Freddie lenders, counts rent. Classic FICO doesn't. Fannie Mae's underwriting system can also use 12 months of rent from bank data, separate from your score.

Can rent reporting lower my score?

Yes, if late payments are reported. A new account can also cause a short dip, according to Flex.

Is it worth paying for?

Several services report to all three bureaus for $0 (see our free list). Paying makes more sense if you need back-reporting of past rent.

How fast will I see a change?

Providers say 10 to 60 days for the account to appear. A score change, if any, can take longer.

Not financial advice. Rent reporting can help build credit history, but results vary and not all bureaus, lenders or scoring models count rent. We don't guarantee any credit-score change.
