How to pick

  1. Check if you're already covered. Pull your free reports and look for a rent account. TransUnion lists it under Satisfactory Accounts.
  2. Already on Chime or Zillow payments? Turn on the free reporting there first.
  3. Want all 3 bureaus, no landlord, $0? Self or Bilt.
  4. Need 2 years of past rent? Compare the back-reporting fee, not just the monthly price.
  5. Only care about Experian? Experian Boost, if your rent payments qualify.

FAQ

Is free rent reporting legit?

The services above are run by the bureaus (Experian Boost) or by companies that say they furnish data to the bureaus. Check your report 30 to 60 days after enrolling.

Which free service reports to all three bureaus?

Self, Bilt, Chime (via Boom), Zillow and Jetty Credit all say they report to all three. Only Self and Bilt don't need your landlord or a specific bank.

Does free reporting include past rent?

Usually not. Self charges $49.95 for 2 years of lookback, per its 2023 announcement.

Will it raise my score?

It can help build credit history. Results vary, and not all scoring models count rent. See does rent reporting raise your score.

Is Piñata free?

Piñata has a free rewards-only tier. Its own FAQ says that tier doesn't include credit building. Reporting is $5/mo.

Not financial advice. Rent reporting can help build credit history. Results vary, and not all bureaus, lenders or scoring models count rent. Confirm terms with each provider.
