How to report rent to all three credit bureaus
Last checked Oct 28, 2026. Not financial advice.
TL;DR
- You usually can't send rent to the bureaus yourself (Equifax says so). You need your landlord or a rent reporting service.
- Step 1: check your reports. Your rent may already be there.
- Step 2: ask your landlord. The CFPB suggests this first.
- Step 3: use a service that reports to all three. Several do it for $0 to $5 a month.
- Kikoff reports rent to 2 bureaus. Experian Boost reports to 1.
Step 1: Check whether rent is already reported
- Get your free reports. TransUnion says you can get one weekly from each bureau at annualcreditreport.com.
- Look for a rental account. On a TransUnion report, on-time rent shows under Satisfactory Accounts.
- TransUnion's research found 27% of property managers report rent.
Step 2: Ask your landlord
The CFPB's tip: ask your landlord if they take part in a rent reporting program, often through a rent payment app, and check for fees. Before you ask, know one thing: a landlord program may report late payments too.
Step 3: Use a service that reports to all three bureaus

What you'll need
Most services ask for:
- ID verification.
- Lease details: your name, rent amount, dates, address, landlord info (Chime/Boom list these).
- The bank account you pay rent from. Boom says Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, ACH and checks work if traceable to that account.
- Kikoff also asks for a valid lease and landlord information for verification.
Step 4: Confirm it landed
- Boom: report updated in as few as 10 days; allow up to 30.
- Zillow: 45 to 60 days to appear.
- Flex: reports on the 21st; allow up to 30 days. Shows as "Flexible Finance".
- If it's wrong, dispute it. Zillow says to contact the bureau or Zillow support. Chime says Boom handles Chime rent disputes.
Before you sign up: 5 questions
Equifax and TransUnion both suggest checking these:
- Which bureaus get the data?
- Monthly fee, setup fee, and back-reporting fee?
- Are late payments reported?
- What happens when you cancel? (Flex closes the tradeline.)
- Do the scores you care about count rent? FICO 8 doesn't.
FAQ
Can I report my own rent?
Not directly. Equifax: "You usually cannot report rent payments to the NCRAs by yourself." Use a service or your landlord.
What's the cheapest way to reach all three bureaus?
$0: Self or Bilt, no landlord needed. Chime members can use Boom at no extra charge.
How far back can I report?
Up to 24 months with Boom, Piñata, Credit Rent Boost and Self (fees vary).
Will reporting raise my score?
It can help build credit history. Results vary and not all scoring models count rent.
Do I need my landlord's permission?
Not for Self, Bilt, Boom, Piñata or Credit Rent Boost. Zillow and Jetty work only if your landlord uses them.
Not financial advice. Rent reporting can help build credit history. Results vary, and not all bureaus, lenders or scoring models count rent.
